Tuesday, September 16, 2025 – Martha Prideaux, Cold Wax Medium: Talk and Demo
Marthaprideaux.com @marthaprideaux

Martha Prideaux will explain the many benefits of using cold wax medium and she will address some follow-up questions. She will show a brief presentation that features cold wax medium paintings and then do a live demonstration and answer any questions.

Martha Prideaux is a mixed media abstract expressionist artist who divides her time between Richmond, VA and Beaufort, NC. She is known for using cold wax medium mixed with oil paint to create work that suggests the passage of time. Her work often incorporates drawing, collage, and other mixed media techniques. She is an adjunct faculty member of the Studio School at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Tuesday, October 21, 2025 – Jacquilyn Berry, Jovial Jaunt through 19th Century French Impressionism
www.jacquilynberrypaintings.com
www.instagram.com/jacquilynberrypaintings

Jacquilyn will present a PowerPoint talk on the Impressionist movement, focusing mainly on Monet, Manet, Degas, and Renoir. Along with take-home booklets for easy reference, the presentation will explore not only the artwork but also the social, economic, and political context in which Impressionism emerged. *Please note that this program will run longer than usual, so our TAA Business Meeting will be conducted via email following the event.

Jacquilyn was raised in Germany and immersed in European art from a young age. She began painting in high school, inspired by the Impressionist masters. She studied at VCU School of Arts, later earning a Master's in 19th Century French Impressionism. Her work has evolved into expressive landscapes and abstracts that invite viewers to explore their own subconscious, emotions, and dreams. Inspired by Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s quote, “Too much sanity may be madness,” her art seeks to reveal beauty and hope beyond the visible. Jacquilyn’s serene landscapes aim to offer calm and reflection in today’s fast-paced world. “My landscapes are gateways for the viewer to have a truly unique and personal journey through them. I put in enough detail for the viewer to understand the composition and leave out enough detail so that the viewer's subconscious can plant its own details into the landscape. In this way, the canvas becomes a portal for the viewer's imagination to saunter through fond childhood memories, favorite pieces of literature, find a place of solitude for inward self-reflection, and have a moment of reprieve from the outside world.” Her paintings can be seen in her booth at Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA.

Tuesday, January 20, 2026 – Maria Reardon, Everyday Painting with Gouache Demo and Lesson
www.mariareardon.com

How often should you paint? The saying, 'practice makes perfect' (or at least a better chance of achieving perfection) can be so true in the pursuit of your art. Maria has found that the practice of painting every day, particularly with the use of Gouache as her medium, has been a fun and enlightening exploration and has increased her skills as an artist. During this presentation, Maria will talk about her Gouache materials and technique, show examples of her work and paint a demonstration piece.

Maria Reardon paints the world around her; loves being outdoors, immersed in nature, observing and experiencing everything going on first hand. She finds inspiration in rural and natural areas and often features horses, farm animals and wildlife in her landscapes. Her passion is painting on location, Plein Air, using vibrant and diverse colors in an impressionistic fashion, to represent the light and mood of a particular location.

Maria is a Virginia native and received her formal education from Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in illustration. She continued her study of the landscape with nationally known artists. Her work has been exhibited and is in private collections. She has received top awards during plein air competitions and gallery shows and her work has been published in art journals. She is currently represented by Cabell Gallery (Lexington VA), Allure Art Center (White Stone VA) and Franco's Fine Clothier (Richmond VA). Maria enjoys teaching and is an instructor for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School (Richmond VA) and the Tuckahoe Woman’s Club (Richmond VA). When she is not painting outdoors from life, she works from her studios in Rockville and Goshen VA.

Tuesday, February 17, 2026 – Diego Sanchez, Mixed Media Lecture/Demo

Diego Sanchez typically works on a series of mixed media pieces on paper at one time. As described by Sanchez, “these pieces will reflect my intuitive approach to my work. The creation of these expressive and colorful pieces is dynamic and the process is experimental, hopefully resulting in visually engaging and resonant artworks.” Watch and join in conversation while we enjoy his demo during this enlightening program.

Diego was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and arrived in the United States in the summer of 1980. He earned an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and has been teaching art for over 30 years to students of all ages. His teaching experience includes positions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, VCU, VUU, and currently, St. Catherine’s School. Diego has exhibited his work throughout Virginia, and internationally in Italy, Belgium, Colombia, and France. In addition to the scheduled programs, two workshops are offered to TAA members on a first come first served basis. Registration forms and information, including details and deadlines, will be emailed to members in advance of each workshop. Registration forms will also be on hand at the program meetings if space in the workshop is still available. Fall Workshop – September 17, 18 and 19, 2025, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Debra Keirce, Deep Dive into Color Workshop, Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, Duntreath Hall, 7000 Park Ave, Richmond, VA

The workshop will explore the three main attributes of oil color. This class will be a wonderful experience for students at any skill level. While color can be extremely complicated, it’s also one of the basics, and artists at all skill levels working with varied media can apply these principles. Day 1: Value – All Its Nuances. We will create two monochromatic paintings using different techniques. Learn how value drives realism and how adjusting value relationships can strengthen your artwork—even when it means altering your reference. Day 2: Hue – Adding Life to a Scene. We will explore hue and color theory, including color harmonies and the creative use of discord. Participants will learn how to “push” color choices for more vibrant, expressive realism. Day 3: Chroma – Boldness and Subtlety. Discover how saturation can shape mood, direct focus, and even define your artistic brand. Participants will apply what they’ve learned about value, hue, and chroma to create eye-catching, expressive art.

Cost: $300 Members; $330 Non-Members (Membership Dues are $45/year). With a limited group size of 8-15, participants will receive excellent instruction and attention from Debra. Registrants will be provided with a materials list. Registration is open to TAA Members initially and will open to non-members if minimum registration has not been met. A one-day participation option is available for $120, or two days for $230. Days 2 and 3 build upon information covered on Day 1. Snacks/light fare and beverages will be provided

Debra has earned several honors in acclaimed art circles. She is proud to be a US coast guard artist, and winner of the 2022 George Gray award. She is the recipient of a rare artist residency at sea with crew on the U.S. National Security Cutter Stone. Eleven of her paintings are hanging in the Boston Langham 5-star hotel. Debra is an Art Renewal Center Living Master, and holds signature memberships in the National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society, American Women Artists, Southwest Artists, and Miniature Artists of America. She is a juried member of several societies, including Copley Society of Art, Salmagundi Club, International Guild of Realism, Women Artists of the West, and American Artists Professional League.

Transform your portrait work from simple likenesses into captivating windows to the soul. Join renowned artist Pam Wenger for an immersive intensive workshop that will revolutionize how you capture human expression in your artwork. Dive deep into the nuanced world of portraiture in this intimate, hands-on workshop. You will discover how the subtle interplay of facial features creates an infinite variety of human expression. Through focused instruction and practical exercises, you'll learn:
• The secret language of micro-expressions and how to translate them onto your canvas

You will work with three carefully selected reference subjects, each chosen to challenge and develop different aspects of your technique. Learn to paint in watercolor in a spontaneous style that involves minimal layering and the use of transparent colors. During this workshop participants will focus on loosening up the portrait painting process and on learning strategies for creating a successful portrait. To focus on the painting process, participants will be working from partially pre-drawn portraits (furnished by the instructor). Samples of the paints that are highlighted in the workshop will be provided. This workshop will be a combination of demo and hands-on portrait work.

Cost: $110 Members, $125 Non-Members.

Art has always been a part of Pam Wenger’s life. Some of her favorite childhood memories involve creative projects. Later, as an elementary school teacher, she found plenty of outlets for creativity. After retiring in 2012, she began to seriously explore painting. She chose watercolor, thinking it would be easier and less expensive than oils—both of which proved to be incorrect. She enjoys painting a wide range of subjects but is drawn to portraits and figurative work. She took art classes in college and studied further at her local art association. She’s worked with portrait artist Ted Nuttall and attended sessions with Charles Reid—both of whom have deeply influenced her approach to painting. Portraits remain her true passion. She finds joy in trying to capture the essence of a person through expression, pose, and composition.
