Fall Workshop – Monday, November 9, 2026, 9am-3pm, and/or Tuesday, November 10, 2026, 9am-3pm, Maria Reardon, Gouache Workshop with Maria Reardon Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, Duntreath Hall, 7000 Park Ave, Richmond, VA. Minimum 6 students, maximum 16 students. Registration deadline is Sept. 30, 2026.
These two workshop days are designed to stand alone or both days can be attended. Following the enthusiastic response to Maria’s January demonstration, we are delighted to welcome her back for two one-day workshops. Gouache (pronounced gwash) is an opaque, water-based medium similar to watercolor that allows artists to paint from dark to light, make corrections easily and create rich, vibrant color. Maria will introduce the fundamentals of gouache while guiding students through techniques useful for color studies, travel sketching, and finished paintings. Students will complete one or more paintings while learning gouache techniques applicable to landscape, still life, and plein air subjects. Lunch is included.
Member Cost: $120 per day ($240 for 2 days)
Maria Reardon paints the world around her; loves being outdoors, immersed in nature, observing and experiencing everything going on first hand. She finds inspiration in rural and natural areas and often features horses, farm animals and wildlife in her landscapes. She continued her study of the landscape with nationally known artists. Her work has been exhibited and is in private collections. Minimum 12 students, maximum 25 students. Registration deadline is January 19, 2027.
Each day is designed to stand alone, or participants may register for both days to experience the full workshop. Discover the power of color, contrast and composition in this dynamic workshop with nationally recognized artist Susan Stuller. Through demonstrations, hands-on instruction, and individual coaching, students will strengthen their design skills while exploring both traditional watercolor techniques and innovative mixed-media approaches. Whether you’re a watercolor traditionalist or eager to explore the exciting arena of mixed media, Susan will guide you through a transformative artistic journey. Lunch is included.
Day 1: Focus on designing with intention while developing confident brushwork and building rich, luminous watercolor layers. Susan will demonstrate how she combines multiple reference photos to create strong compositions using tracing paper, Sharpie markers, and students' own images. She will also demonstrate her glazing techniques to achieve vibrant color, dramatic contrast, and effective values before students begin their own paintings. Susan's hands-on teaching style includes demonstrations in stages and plenty of individual guidance throughout the day.
Day 2: Explore the creative possibilities of painting on a gessoed surface, which offers the fluidity of Yupo paper with added texture and control. This "Fix-a-Painting" day will show students how to revive or completely transform an older watercolor using gesso and fresh tube paints. Students should bring either an older watercolor they'd like to revise or a sheet of watercolor paper that has been completely coated with gesso. Through demonstrations and personalized instruction, Susan will help artists of all experience levels discover new techniques and fresh approaches to their watercolor paintings.
Member Cost: $80 (one day), $150 (both days)
